Alocasia 'Aline' ?

Post by AndyC »

Remember the picture of this Alocasia from the Living Rainforest meet?
Image
I have been trying to identify it ever since and now having waded through what seems like a million thumbnails, I think I may have got
it
What do you think? :D

You are probably both right. I didn't know there was a variegated 'Wentii'. I'll do some more picture searching.
Is that a picture of your plant Mark?

I've been growing it for a couple of years as 'Aline', are you sure it's the same thing? (there are a lot of new forms coming out of tissue culture now). Either way, Alocasia wendtii variegated would be an invalid name, so 'Aline' is probably best.

(I got it from Wisley).

The problem with Alocasia is that the American hobbyist has great success with creating hybrids, and probably hoping to get lucky with a real stunner. The ones that just look slightly different are probably given away or swapped, and in no time no-one really knows what they are. Many of the sell by names are just what the seller has been told. If you compare yours with pic on the web, how can you tell who has the real one, and who has a hybrid, or are they all hybrids

All you really can say is "Mine looks like a XXX Type, but someone will always say "oh, no it doesn't, 'cos my one does not"
Best regards
Dave

I agree with John though Aline sounds better than Wentii Variegated.

Andy,

No,

This site has a picture, but mis-identifies it as Colocasia esculenta 'Illustris'.

It took a lot of personal e-mails to academics, and the help of Deni Bown, to track down Peter Boyce who had acted as academic referee for the original species description [Colocasia gaoligongensis H.Li & C.L.Long -- Feddes Repert. 110(5-6): 423.
1999 (IK)].

Chad.
