Hello
bought 6 Jumbo plugs, Carex Red Rooster off Ebay as my garden centres( tried 5 around where I live ) did not sell them or only had the odd grass. Ebay only had plugs too and could not find larger plants elsewhere. Should be getting them either today or tomorrow. Can I plant these straight into my front border or do I have to repot them and grow them on for a while? Also how fast do they grow?
Thanks very much

Jumbo Plug Carex Red Rooster ready to plant in garden?
Re: Jumbo Plug Carex Red Rooster ready to plant in garden?
Rachel, I think this is a bronze form of Carex comans which is as tough as old boots so you should be able to plant them out straight away. They self seed in my garden and seem to particluarly like growing on the edge of the drive and the cracks between paving.

I agree with AndyC, grew this in my last garden, self seeds everywhere and the smallest of plants survives, tough as old boots too in my experience. I really liked this grass, very soft and moves nicely in breeze, hubby always complained it looked dead though, he likes green plants

Hello
I thought comans and red rooster were different? I am hoping I have bought red rooster. Will cutting the seed heads off stop it from self seeding? My front garden, entire thing is shingled, slated and slabbed now and just put loads of weedkiller down on my drive. I like the dead look. 1 garden centre I visited the other day had 1 red rooster and I liked it's upright growth, but wanted 6. I thought comans was more of a floppy, bushy grass and not upright. I also think red rooster grows bigger than comans. I did buy red rooster as loads of websites online says it is non invasive and easy to look after so hoping it does not self seed everywhere ;-(
Cheers

I think cutting seed heads off will help Rachel, from experience though the seedlings are quite easy to pull out when it happens, they used to annoy me when seeded into lawn, but you have no grass at front so won't be an issue. They prefer moist soil, I think they will look good in your garden

Hello Trudy
I have some plant out back which used to seed everywhere and I now cut the flowers off that ( flowers are not that nice) and it does not seed now. My garden out front is South facing so I will have to make sure I water well there to keep them moist. Thanks to both of you for your advice and help.
Cheers

You are correct Rachel, I should have googled the name before replying.Rachelpalm wrote:I thought comans and red rooster were different?
'Red Rooster' is a form of Carex buchananii and not Carex comans. Having said that, they are very similar in appearance and requirements. The RHS manual says that C. buchananii is not quite as hardy as C. comans but you should still have not problems planting it out now and it should survive our winters ok.
