this pic should help you.just snip off the lower branches as close to the main culm as possible.

I planted over 60 canes of arrow bamboo the wkend in a big grove, it was a nightmare to dig out from a monster grove & some of the canes even though there quite thick had to be chopped down to about 1ft in height, i took out a decent amount of rootball but was wondering if these short canes would slow down its development?. karl.

No, should be fine, even read you can run your mower over it :? Apparently cutting the tops off promotes branching, have not tried this myself, I just cut out the more straggly looking canes and pinch out any dead leaves.

Arrow bamboo used by the ancient Japanese warriors for arrows :D

Thanks trudy, i think i'm going to harvest some in big containers as it will be good kindle for my log burner :) . karl.
