this pic should help you.just snip off the lower branches as close to the main culm as possible.

I planted over 60 canes of arrow bamboo the wkend in a big grove, it was a nightmare to dig out from a monster grove & some of the canes even though there quite thick had to be chopped down to about 1ft in height, i took out a decent amount of rootball but was wondering if these short canes would slow down its development?. karl.

No, should be fine, even read you can run your mower over it Apparently cutting the tops off promotes branching, have not tried this myself, I just cut out the more straggly looking canes and pinch out any dead leaves.
