Bamboo shooting dates 2013

Post by Neil Ziemski »

Any shoots yet- it's a bit chilly I know but we must be close.
And does anyone feed and what with-I've heard it's best to feed just before shooting-will that make any difference?

Nothing on any of mine yet but, you're right, it must be close.

I read that bamboos should be fed in Autumn as that is when they start to save up their energy reserves ready to unleash the new culms the following spring. I certainly feed mine well in autumn and not at all in early spring based on that belief.

It will be interesting to hear how others feed their boo.

the only one I have shooting so far is Plieoblastus viridistriatus and it is just starting. I have a gang of yellow groove but no shoots just yet. with the hot temps here the last few days it shouldn't be long.

I several clumps of P. Nigra and Aurea scattered all over that have been shooting since around January time, albeit very slowly. The tallest shoots are on the nigra ( approx 4ft) but are thin , perhaps down to the fact they were split last year. The best , thickest culms are on the aurea clumps with the tallest about 3ft and more breaking thru......

Aurea taken early this morning .........

The only other boo i have is rhyzome propagations of phyllostachys vivax aureocaulis and they've been growing slowly but steadily in a unheated greenhouse over the winter.

My P. Nigra are doing nothing so far. I have mulched with some rotted manure to try and assist.
Most wanted list - Any Young Trachycarpus and/or fern.
