Ensete glaucum ? If so, it's taken -4C (:-o) superbum then

Post by Dave Brown »

Is this Ensete glaucum :?: If it is...... 2 things.

1) I don't know where it came from, as my seed grown ones are 4 years old now, and I don't remember anyone giving an E glaucum last year.

2) it was left in the covered bit last winter which went down to -4C, where the Ensete ventricosum died...... this one looked dead but when I was about to throw it out, the corm felt solid so I kept it, and it resprouted :ahhh!: . I have some pics on the server, but it is in pieces at the moment. Here are a couple of pics from recently.

  Brain like a sieve  I didn't think superbum was anywhere near as hardy as ventricosum. This one defo took -4C. I did note the shorter trunk though.

I'll look for, and add, the other pics when we've rebuilt ther server

They're not supposed to be anywhere near as hardy as ventricosum, you're right on the money with that.
All I can think of is that it survived because the compost was bone dry maybe?,so it survived like a corm or bulb would in cold storage.Or you've just got a very cold tolerant one there, either way its a result 8)
And I hope you have as much luck with it this winter icon_thumleft

It might be worth having a go with some seed next year and seeing how they go when dry in winter. would be good if they could be treated like Maurelii and stored dry over winter

Don't seem to have a pic of the actual corm but this is a pic of a similar one taken at about the same time.

Here it in early July after resprouting.
