Chamaedoea metallica flowering

Post by Dave Brown »

I was given this palm at a meet back in 2008. It is not the fastest growing palm but plods away in the shadows. A few weeks ago I noticed it had 2 flower spikes and didn't think much of it. Today when I looked at it the flowers have turned orange/red :ahhh!: Does this mean they are actually berries :?: If so it must be self fertile as as I only have one.

If its anything like elegans then it will hold them for a while then dump them all over the place, I have just taken six inflorescences from my elegans, they make fantastic colour stems and berries but what a mess they make in the conservatory.

I had a few metallica's years ago but tired of the slow growth so planted them out, one made it through one winter but died the next, the other died first time out.

I just let things like this plod along at it's own pace, If I want to see rapid growth I watch the Aroids, Ensete and Bananas

I take it these are not self fertile then :?: As there are no other Chamaedorea in flower, It has 2 spikes, one after the other.
Best regards
