Before I started my garden I spoke to the neighbours and told them what I was planning to do with the borders.

I asked if they were ok with the plans and they said yes. I also said that if stuff grew through or over the fence just give me a shout and I'd come and cut it back and tidy up whenever they asked.

I think things like this go a long way. My laurels and Fatshedera are now either growing above or through the fence and when talking to the neighbours this afternoon I reminded them to let me know when they wanted me to come and prune. They said they liked the extra greenery coming over and it was fine.

I think that's what's known as a tre-emptive strike tactic.

They have trimmed shrubs back before, and thrown it over the fence onto my dining table on the deck, once while I was sitting there. I had that out with them on the spot, that was 2 years ago. They have never touched the Washingtonia before, so think they must be spoiling for another spat of some kind.

I took a pic this afternoon showing the leaves trimmed

Is that antenna on their side? ... maybe a chop if it overhangs your property line, is in order.

Cheers, Barrie.

The antenna is on their side just. It used to be on the roof but kept blowing about so they stuck it on a pole in the garden.

You'd probably find that any plants in pots would mysteriously move around from one garden to another, though

i'd be in Goggles garden everynight  supermarket sweep

I wouldn't mind but they NEVER go into their gardens, which are completely bare, & they even cut off my Phoenix canariensis_CIDP fronds which are several feet above head height! They also cut back my climbers that were growing through the fence (to block them out) & killed the lot & even cut through the wire of my garden lights in the process!! The bloody cowards wouldn't answer the door when we knocked to have it out with them... The same neighbour cut right through the trunk of one of my Musa basjoo before too & said it was "an accident" :x B******s!!

Nathan surely thats criminal damage, assuming the musa was in your garden, what excuse could they have had to cut it, or is it open plan and adjoining at the front as some gardens are. We don't have problems that way at all, our neighbours are glad when we do things in our gardens front and back, it makes theirs look bette :D r
Well they were again hacking back all my climbers (killing them actually right back to the bare fence), they were actually using a machete! With one fail swoop the Musa was cut down, accidently they say. At least then they knocked the door to apologise... It was in the back garden, we only have a 4 wall, with at the time just a 2ft wire fence on top of that, hence trying to grow the climbers for some privacy...
We now have a 6ft bamboo screen, raised a couple of feet, to screen the b******s out

here's a great tip to piff off a neighbour:

mix up some concentrated round-up + water in to ice cube tray. freezeover night. next evening, throw the cubes randomly over their lawn. sit back and wait for the magic to begin.

If i were you Dave, Everytime we had a breezy night, I`d nip outside with a long stick and push their antenna so it pointed slightly away from their reception area. They`d just think it was the wind. It`d drive them nuts!!
I`ve always been lucky with neighbours but unfortunately the elderly woman living on one side of me died a number of years ago. The house has remained empty thus far, but well maintained by her family - It`s gone up for sale this year and i`m worried who might buy it :( Might end up with some loony ones!!

That is ridiculously petty, such a beautiful tree too!

My elderly neighbour recently employed a gardener to come on to my property (while I was at work) to cut the top off of a bush as she claimed she couldn't see over the top of it. So I have total understanding of how petty and stupid these people can be. Previously I let her roses happily grow over on to my side of the fence, now I take the shears to them and starting with the flowers first. I'm off to get a get grubbing mattock at the weekend so I can commence the first phase of operation eternal shade hag

my dad takes credit for that one: he's completely crackers when it comes to stuff like that - yes he has done it. also, he has sprayed next door's overgrown shrubs with round up using a bicycle pump from his bedroom window.
