washingtonia filibusta

Post by MikeC »

Looking at the Amulree 50% sale I am very tempted by the washingtonia filibusta which it says has 1.1m trunk for £100.

I've already got a Robusta of a similar size, is this hybrid worth a try?

Anyone any experience of how tough this palm is?

Cheers,

Mike

This cross should have the cold resistance of filifera and the damp resistance of robusta

Soon find out!

Although it will be protected in my yet to be tried 3m x 3m gazebo + rope lights winter protection system in the coldest weather.

There are photos on another thread. It looked a poorly palm with few roots. I would choose one in person .

I'm not sure this has been tested to be the case. If fact, I'm not sure anyone has one in the ground for long enough to make a comparison.

I think those selling pick the genetics to have the best of both worlds to assist selling, and again. I'm not sure it works like that. Worst case could be a palm that has robusta's lack of cold tolerance, coupled with filifera's lack of humidity tolerance
Best regards
Dave

My poorly filibusta is settling in okay.

When we get a nice bright day I'll take some more pictures.

Looks better now than it did when I bought it.

Only protection has been a heat cable and a dust sheet thrown over it on a couple of coldish nights, that's all.

It does look much better/happier.
Hope we have a mild winter and it pulls thru for you as its a good sized palm.
