PALMS IN CHRISTCHURCH BOTANICAL GARDENS
PALMS IN CHRISTCHURCH BOTANICAL GARDENS
Hi Everyone, just decided to go down to the Ch.Ch Botanical gardens this morning, as it was a beautiful Spring morning, and took a couple of snap shots of Palms growing around the gardens.

Great photos. I think the unknown one is a chammy.

Wonderful!
The unknown is a chammy. Must be at least 50 years old.

Gorgeous pics. I wonder why the Trachys don't look as good as the other specimens? Too dry perhaps?

Hi Rod, fantastic photos of the gardens.
Can you tell me what the Winter low temperatures are approximately in the Christchurch Botanical Gardens please.
I ask mainly because Parajubaeas seem to not quite make it here in the UK. I checked the average Winter temperature stats for Christchurch and they are very similar to Southern England but an average does not tell the full story so I hoping you can help to fill in the gaps please.

Hi Daniel - Have a look at this very detailed temperature graph of the Botanical gardens, that i put together, from the weather station they have there.Daniel wrote:Hi Rod, fantastic photos of the gardens.

That chammy looks SO heathy! Never seen such a good looking one.
Beautiful gardens. Shame we dont have a 'Southsea botanical gardens' we might be able to achieve something similar over here?

Thank you for the stats Rod, very interesting. As I suspected the absolute minimums you get there are higher than we would get in the UK, even on the South coast.
You also get some pretty astonishing absolute high temperatures, pretty much any time of the year.
All very interesting considering that your averages as I said in my earlier post are very similar to the UK.
And this is why you can grow Parajubaeas and we struggle, although I'm going to have one more go and try a big one one day.

Great photo's
Parajubaea Torallyii grows alright for me Daniel, a small one came through the last couple of cold winters undamaged so I bought a bigger one this spring...Daniel wrote:Thank you for the stats Rod, very interesting.
