Cycad help

Post by chrismc » Thu Aug 23, 2012 5:17 pm

Hi All,
Ive just been given 5 one foot Cycads and i was wondering are they worth trying to save. Only one has any leaves and they are covered in some sort of white sticky fluff (which seems to be coming from a type of white bug/mite).
Has anyone any experience with these and have you saved your cycad (pics to follow)?

hope you can help

Thats plain old meally bug, wash it off and then spray the leaves thoroughly with provado or similar as they get right down into the trunk, the mulch of coffee grinds will work to keep them at bay.
Yes always worth keeping Cycads unless they are soft and rotten.

Well all the cycads are solid so i think im on to a winner... i'll treat as you say and see what comes up. Regarding overwintering should i greenhouse these (heated) or are they ok outside (the wall they're against has sun all year)

I got mealy bug on a Cycas last winter. "Combed" it off several times, a bit painstaking to do. In the end I put it outside, just bringing it in on the coldest nights, and used the cold to keep the bugs under control!

Well done Chris icon_bigsmurf for using Coffee for your Cycas. Let's hope that it would recover. I never met the deadly white scale. Sponge wash your Cycas with coffee water for best results that will keep brown scale insects at bay.

So far I never seen the CAS (Cycad Aulacaspis Scale) in reality or touched the CAS with my fingers atleast on any one Cycas Revoluta anywhere in our city.
This video shows how much ruthless destruction and death that  CAS  can bring to Cycads.
