Re: Southsea Phoenix canariensis, Phoenix canariensis_CIDP seed germinated !!!
Mark, thanks for the prompt. I have been meaning to repot Little SID this year, but not got around to it. After reading your post I went and repotted Little SID straight away thanks.
The clay pot is about 5 times the size of the last. I have gone for a more loam based soil than before as I think they prefer loam to peat. The compost is based on 3 parts loam, 1 part coarse sand, 1 part peat mp compost and 1 part horticultural grit
Anyway here is Little SID in his new pot There is a bit of leaflet damage due to drought and the -4C it was subjected to in the unheated coivered bit last winter.

thanks for the reply!
are you not tempted to put the pot in a tray of water to combat the drought?
looks like little SID is doing great!

I may consider it next year, but there is is so much volume of soil, compared to root it is not going to dry out terribly quickly at the momentDarlo Mark wrote:thanks for the reply!

Might grow a bit quicker now with good root room
Best regards

You've murdered it
I had Little Sid, and a tray of 5 other Southsea siblings in my unheated covered bit, and another 8 in the the frost free poly. All sailed through and the smaller palms were all in trays of water all over winter, so what are you doing Ade . I suspect you have so much crammed in and no airflow which allows rot. my covered bit is drafty, and the poly has a 16 inch fan blowing all the time the doors are shut over winter.
I suggest you try to revive it as there do not seem to be any more seed reaching maturity now. It seems it was maybe the heatwave in 2006 that ripened the seed. At this stage it looks like a one off crop.

Yes, it was turning into a nice little palm as well
Re: Southsea Phoenix canariensis, Phoenix canariensis_CIDP seed germinated !!!
There are more fruits on the palms, but they are too high up to reach, will have to see if any drop under them...

Re: Southsea Phoenix canariensis, Phoenix canariensis_CIDP seed germinated !!!
I looked from 200u7 onward until last July, and the only ones at full size I saw were the unreachable ones from 2006/7. New ones had formed but did not seem to get to mature size.Nathan wrote:There are more fruits on the palms, but they are too high up to reach, will have to see if any drop under them...
The ones from 2006/7 seemed to have been on the tree for 3 years as there were 2 more sets of flowers with fruit set. Those just didn't seem to grow in the 3 years I was watching. Maybe they have just taken longer to grow in the cooler years.
You'll have to get down there with a ladder
Best regards
Dave

Mine didnt make it Dave, unheated greenhouse was just too much for it.
