We need to start a survey of the larger Washingtonia palms in the UK. Billdango's idea

Some, like mine are well known and documented, but others seem to be tucked away and remain anonymous. If you know of a large Washingtonia let us know, and if possible post up a pic

Please only post on this topic if you are identifying a large palm or posting a pic of one. Use the general discussion topic for general Washingtonia discussion.

PS by large we are talking 10ft (3m) plus

I'll start the ball rolling with mine which is about 11ft (3.5m) Taken back in August

Used to drive past this last year and it is taller than this old street view pic, trunk is filling out nicely, never seen it protected. Might have a look tomorrow see how it's getting on

Some in Bournemouth this is one of them also Cosham near Portsmouth and Weymouth and Hasting no photos of them sorry .The 2nd photo is a double trunk in hamble not so big but rare .

This one is growing in Sandsfoot Gardens, Weymouth. (sorry to people that saw it on the EPS although this photo was taken on a sunnier day).

Three of the four were planted at the same time but the one of the left has grown like a rocket compared to the others. The one planted in the shadiest conditions was killed in Winter 2010 and replaced in Spring 2011. It is the other one in the foreground.

All the Washy I see that look good are next to a wall or building .

Heres one in Chingford, London E4 , photo taken in april so it looks a lot better now after the summer.I'll see if i can get a picture update later in the week.

EDIT:if you go to http://www.flickr.com/map and click 'search the map' type 'washingtonia' and for location put 'UK' and it comes up with some big ones

This is undoubtedly the biggest in the UK, growing at Tresco Abbey Gardens on the Isles of Scilly...

Yes that one is just around the corner from where I live & like you say never been protected. There are a few dotted about but some are in back gardens & can't be seen easily on street view, there is a big one in a back garden near the Co-op in Devonshire Avenue, but you can't see it very clearly on street view...

Is the Image barryw.jpg Palm almost dying? It all looks like dead leaves? I love the look of the Chelsea one.

Do the leaves drop off when they go gray and form new.

Like I say, I don't have any palm like that just a Trachicarpus.

No Barry's palm just had some leaves frosted after a cold winter. He was also keeping the dead leaves on the trunk to form a 'skirt', something which Washingtonias do as they don't drop their dead fronds & in extreme cases the whole trunk can be covered, like this:
