Do you have any words of wisdom on growing Parajubaea Torallyi outside Jon?

Hi Martin

Is Jon me? If so I have never tried and based on my winter palm write off this year its not one I would try. I am now a broken exoticist.

Yes it was you John. I thought you might have some wisdom on the subject :) Lets hope in a more normal winter losses are somewhat less than they were this year!

Hi Martin sorry for having my head in the clouds. You should normally have an advantage down on the South coast. The normal things to increase its chances of survival are raised bed, well drained soil that is chunky and loose to let the roots free, a sheltered position and with more marginal palms a dedication to go out on freezing cold nights with fleece and sacking to put round round. Do not leave wrapped up for weeks on end and do not use bubble wrap. Give it plenty of water in the summer and I would use Palmbooster to promote root growth. An overhead cannopy in winter will probably reduce radiation frost.

I have just planted P torallyi out in the garden (in Eastbourne, Sussex), so your comments are very helpful.

You are right that we generally have a more favourable winter here, but the winter wet has taken its toll perhaps more so than elsewhere. We can also get some very cold weather from the East, Kent can get it quite bad, and the very thing that normally shelters Eastbourne from the prevailing Westerlies (being on the lee side of the South Downs) exposes us fully to the cold easterly winds on the rare occasions they blow.

Hi Chalk Brow keep us posted how it gets on. I live about the furthest point from the sea in the Uk, near some famous frost hollows. This winter sorted out the men from the boys so I am back in shorts now.

Lets hope it does well Martin. We are lucky in the UK that we can grow outdoors so many different plants from round the world. Its a shame our climate has blips that try and catch us out and keep us on our toes.

Athelas have them: http://www.athelasplants.co.uk/index.ph ... o&prid=204. Yes, they are a right pain to germinate.

I bought mine P. torallyi from Athelas Plants, about two weeks ago, good sized plants, but they had only three or four left then, you can see my plant here:
