I've planted out a multi stem seedling three years ago. Growth rate is the same as a single truck plant, here in my garden anyway. It started as a triple stem, the smallest did not survive the first winter. Now around 6-7ft high (the total plant, not the truncks :D )

A wooden frame with plastic foil stapled on the frame. The leaves tied together, so the coldframe is as tiny as possible. A lightstring around it to give a little heat and frost protection. Temps in this shelter with the lights on (looks nice in winter) are around 4-5C higher then the rest of the garden, just enough to get them through almost without damage.

A pic of winter 2009-2010, march 2010. A smaller, more compact structure works much better I found out.
