TRex (Tetrapanax papyrifer 'Rex') growing in Feb, in winter

Post by Dave Brown »

Was clearing up after having to saw off part of the Cordyline this morning when I couldn't believe my eyes. The TRex pups are coming up and it is only 5th Feb, and after THAT December. I have a feeling these are going to be real survivors.

The pups are about 6 feet from my 2 year Flat leaf TRex in the front garden. Noticed that there is a second pup at the right of the pic, that I didn't see at the time.

I thought they were growing in Feb last year but then thought it was my imagination, but these were not there last week so have grown pretty quickly.

OMG already  Don't they know they should be sleeping. Throw a bucket of ice cubes over them just to remind them it's still Winter  Gawd help all T. rex owners this year.

January was quite a lot milder here than December, and T.p Rex does come from the high mountains in Taiwan, Maybe a max of 7/8C with light frosts are what they are used to without stopping.

well I lived in taiwan for 3 years so i can help here. yes mountainous area are cold but they don't get a long winter, maybe 6weeks - 2 months. Then will heat up quickly. They will like plenty of water!

So a mild January, with much of it being in double figures by day, after the cold December, and they think they're growing in Taiwan still. :D

Just hope they don't get hit by a -5 in March . . . that'd wreck that new growth, and maybe the roots wouldn't have the energy to produce a new replacement flush and so kill the whole plant :?:

I'm not surprised considering the temps at the moment. The bulbs are rocketing up here and a few buds starting to appear early.

In relation to the T-rex. I have a small pup in my poly house and the stem feels very soft to the touch, is this normal?
Most wanted list - Any Young Trachycarpus and/or fern.
