my first casualties - Tetrapanax's dead

Post by dave2166 »

i've had a look today at the two mature plants which were fleeced last winter.

its not pretty, both have no growing point whatsoever, its just gone, along with a pile of the stems which have broken away, and now litter the the area around the base.

i got quite a few root cuttings from the main plant which was about 3 years in the ground.

so the question is do i wait to see if it will put out root shoots, or do i bit he bullet and heave them out ,

i have a 2 decent sized plants which were in the greenhouse, so replacing them is not a problem, its just a disappointment, to see 2 stumps when i remember what they looked like in the summer

oddly they survived last year ok, the temps werent that much lower at -12c ish, against -10c , i suppose it was the 4+ weeeks of it that saw them off

think you would be unlucky if they didnt.6 months in the ground was too long to get all the root out on mine,3 years you should have miles of it

im hoping the roots sections give me a few new ones but the main stems look cream crackered to me...

last year the growing point went and i got a multi stemmed plant out of it, but this year i would need a miracle to get life out of it

i'll post some pics tomorrow when its light.............
