Can bamboo runners harm other plants?

Post by greendragon »

I have ferns and a Trachycarpus quite close to a Vivax bamboo, I'm just wondering is there any way that the bamboo's runners could badly do damage to them?

Sorry if it seems like a dumb question but I have been wondering what the effects could be of bamboo runners going past Palms.

Yep. Root competition for nutrients, and (if the runners are allowed to produce new stems) shading out of the other plants eventually. If the ferns are very shade tolerant they'll be OK, but the Trachycarpus is likely to get shaded out eventually unless it is already taller than the maximum height of the bamboo.

Thanks for the response, I guess im gonna put another fargesia where I had planned to put a Nigra.

Well luckily the Vivax is south of the Trachycarpus.

I guess Im gonna put a Fargesia where I had planned to put a Nigra. I am worried about the runners strangling the trachycarpus lol.

Having had a a culm from my Chusquea culeou spear through a Washingtonia I was unwise enough to plant out alongside I think the answer is yes.

Nigra is well behaved for a Phyllostatchys so needn't be a big problem.
