Bamboo how does it behave when it hits a wall/barrier?

Post by cordyman »

What does Fergesia bamboo do when it hits a wall/barrier

Will it still try and force a culm up against it, or focus its growth on the other x3 sides where it can continue to expand?

My Fergasia campbell hedge has rocketed and already touching the wall

The rhizome will deflect, and depending on species will go sideways, or up, or down. Phyllostachys nigra does all  it will throw up culms as it goes.

plants are pretty clever, i don't think you need to worry about your clumping bamboo hitting barriers.

runners will like dave says try and go around the obstacle or even through it .

this is an old pic, but its very close to the wall tops now, which some are slightly loose, i'm wondering would a culm(s) put enough pressure on to lift them off? I've seen bamboo go through concrete pavement before icon_scratch

or would the culm hit the overhead obstacle and bend at a right angle?

I've noticed with all my potted bamboos that they tend to not throw new culms up close to the barrier (the edge of the pot in this case) so I would imagine the wall below soil level will act in the same way and, unless your coping stones have a large overhang internally, they shouldn't be at risk.

They have a 2" overhang approx, I was picturing having to abort the culms each year which pop up under the overhang icon_scratch

I doubt you'll get any new culms shooting within 2" of the wall Cordy.

Phyllostacys niger is coming up within 2mm of the wall of the front of the bungalow. It is trying whichever way it can to sneak up and establish before I notice, and yank it out. :ahhh!:
