I agree Ade, genuine thatch doesn't last long in the UK in a great condition.
Synthetic thatch is a good alternative though and the prices are fairly reasonable. One of THESE kits make a great starting point allowing the buyer to use basic DIY skills to finish and customise their hut as they require without spending the sort of money some companies charge for a complete kit.
Even a thatched umbrella like these is large enough to build underneath and create a nice looking hut:

I know what you all mean!, throwing 3/3.5k at one of these is a bit extravagent in the present economy. I was on the phone last night to a chippy who does work for us from time to time & he said its something he could part fabricate in his workshop and build a bit at a time in between his other job's. I can get cedar shingles readily but my friend works contracting for a firm that specialises in oak framed buildings & uses 9 inch shiplap boards to clad the sides of the barns, he said these would be better & more hard wearing on the roof. Ade i know what you mean re useage!!, most people who visit us prefer to be near the kitchen & beer fridge!. karl.

That's an asy one to sort Karl, put a power line to it and get a mini fridge in there.

Want a bet?redsquirrel wrote:in africa they wouldnt spend 3k on one
In South Africa they're called "lapa's" and £3k is about R30k so it sounds about right.
Search for "the Lapa Company UK". They're about £12k there. Now we're talking overpriced!
Edit: Sorry, just realised Gogglebox linked to the same company. (different page though)

Re: Tiki Hut?.
Hi all im slowly ready though this post and this is somthing I would like to build too for my small garden. I will be fitting in a raised wooden pond one side and doing some sort of stepped up deck the other and would like a tiki type small hut on there to help add a bit of the tropic feel to it. i could probly make the main structure myself but wouldnt know what out of yet but it dont even have to be big as ive got a small garden just big enough to mabe get a bench or a small table and a couple of chairs under it lol
So if anyone can point me in the right direction too id be greatfull. I would like the straw looking type roof as thats whats makes it what it is but wouldnt know about that either lol
kind regards
Steve

Re: Tiki Hut?.
I had a lappa at my home in South Africa .... I always wondered why they were not so poular here .... They should be good for 15 years if made correctly .... if you look at old thath roof houses here in the UK, the roofs last at least 20 years
the lapa roof is constructed similar to a house, and if/when I buy my own property in the UK, I will have one built (with a BBQ and a wood burning pizza oven)
something similar to this (if space allows):

and then there's decking .... decking is not popular in south africa .... the guys throw a concrete slab, then tile with non-slip italian tiles .... looks a lot better than untreated wood:
