Re: Arlons Blog: Palm bargains
Dito! I popped into the one near me this morning and they have nothing tropical wise, just a few Pheonix for £12. I did get some Hebe's for 50p though and when I went to Morrison's got some Agapanthas for £2 a pot. Might have a look at the bigger BQ tomorrow after work.dino wrote:I've never seen cycads in our one. Brilliant buys

Thank you Dorothy, thats very kind of you to comment.
I'm planning on going back this morning as its only minutes away . After showing the mrs the plants and holding up the £3 variegated fatsia, she commented......"you can't buy a tray of bedding plants for that"............so i got the official approval to go back and get more but i suspect there won't be much if anything left .
Don't give up Cordy (or anyone). The chap in the Cardiff store did say that if stores need the room for the incoming spring stock then they will clear the benches and discount heavily. Newport branch cleared a few weeks ago and i missed out but Cardiff are blitzing theirs now in readiness for the weekend i suspect.cordyman wrote: i called my local b+q and asked are they lowering the palm mass tomb, they said no half price and thats it ! pulled leaving a hole which is constantly filled with water. Went downhill pretty quick and despite there being a few green fronds left, i felt it better to chop it back to good growth before it rotted any further. Gave it a dose of H202 and its now covered with a cloche to keep it dry.........
ah think this might be it, did it survive in the end?

I would Cordy. I asked the manager yesterday why they sell off perfectly good palms / plants for peanuts when in a couple of weeks they'll have the same stuff in at full price. Its all to do with the contracts they have with the nurseries / suppliers and B&Q guarantee to take a minimum annual quantity and also guarantee to have the space available in store ready for delivery. As a result , any old stock is sold off firsty at half price and as the delivery time gets closer they reduce again to the point where they practically give it away . Anything left unsold after that is then generally skipped.
After going back yesterday for a second trip, i came away with the following..............
Another 3no Chamaerops at £4 each ( normally £14.98)
3no Nerium Oleander's at £2 each (normally 12.98)
and another 3no fatsia japonica variegata at £3 each ( normally £9.98 each)
Not a bad haul , i just hope all you lads 'n' lasses have similar luck if you're still hunting........

How cheap!
I've had some bargains in the past, about £100's worth for £30.
Not been this winter, i want to go now lol.
