How many frosts has everyone had in 2011

Post by stephenprudence »

Only people with weather stations or records can answer this really.

The easiest one is to count airfrosts, it's been relatively frost free this year!

12 air frosts from January to November, of which 9 occurred in January, and 3 occurred in March, since then there have been none until just a week ago.

It'll be a tall order to stay under 20 air frosts for the year but still!

Also to my knowedge, no snow has fallen or settled at this location in 2011.. it's unusual, but we have had snowless years before.

Stephen, only five air frosts in my 'high altitude' (92m asl) South London garden. 3rd, 30th and 31st January, all 0c and 1st February -1.5c (the coldest). The last so far this year was 8th March at 0c.

Plenty of short-lived ground frosts. Not much when you consider what we were inflicted with at the end of 2010 :!:

Pretty good going, I'm 110m asl, and tend to get caught in mid level inversions and the like. Also in general it means I'm 0.5C lower than those town at sea level or in urban areas - it usually make the difference between frost and no frost too, many times it's frost free in lower parts of the area but yet here there might be a frost on the roof in marginal situations.

5 air frosts is very low though for anywhere, that's got to be good for the garden, so long as the winter stays fairly friendly too.

One year I had a one and only 0c on March 16th. That applied to the entire previous winter and the full calendar year as well. Can't remember when that was exactly, as my older records are up in the loft.

One hundred yards down my hill is a greenspace sump which would get many air frosts when I get ground. I've measured a five degree difference on a number of occasions. Many times I walked my boys to their school with dew on the cars only to see the grounds opposite the school entrance glistening white.

I get some interesting inversions here as well, more often shown with fog layers this time of year. Leave home in dense fog and go downhill to improved visibility because I've driven below the low level cloud base. Other times, I'm climbing into brilliant winter sunshine with freezing fog below. I often escape an air frost in these conditions.

San, stephen means the whole of 2011. That December messed every thing up because if we hadn't that horrific spell it would have been a mild winter. I'd be guessing but I wouldn't be surprised if we had had less than 10 air frosts this year (1 this autumn).
There were no frosts in April or most of March.

Still 6 weeks to go though!

yeah i know he means the whole of 2011 darlo, that is why i said i wasn't sure about jan-march, as didn't keep track of them. I no april had no frosts in my area as i was outside working through the whole of april with 7.00am starts in the morning, getting my old works garden cleared. As for this winter so far i have had no frosts, but my first frost is likely to be on wednesday.

I can,t be sure here in Southampton but i think i have had about 15 frosts so far excluding last December.
As i live about 2 miles from the city center and in a narrow deep valley i get a lot more frosts then the center of southampton.
so far this autumn and early winter we have had one ground frost only and that was in mid October.
As we rarely get air frosts before end of november its nothing unusual anyway.

Here in Southsea (1m asl)

Air frosts so far in 2011 = 0

My last sub-zero temperature was recorded on Christmas Day 2010...

Monthly Minimums 2011:
January: +0.3C
February: +1.7C
March: +1.3C
April: +6.4C
May: +6.2C
June: +7.4C
July: +12.0C
August: +11.6C
September: +10.2C
October: +6.6C
November: +9.5C (so far)

I would love to be able to remain frost free in 2011 but I'm sure that will be very unlikely...

Thus far, 2011 has been the complete opposite of 2010 in terms of frosts.

In 2010 I got frosts in Jan, Feb, March, (April was warm, but can't remember if I got any night time frosts) May, Oct, Nov & December. This year, 2011, I've only had a handful in Jan.That's all! All the heavy snow we got in Nov & Dec last year had thawed out by Jan.

The only setback I've had this year was due to how hot & dry it was during the spring summer and early autumn for the South East. We only received 5% of the usual rainfall during March to the end of May. That's almost a drought! The plants were getting the early sunshine and heat, but not enough moisture.

Still, overall, It's been a good year so far. :D
