New forum member from north Cheshire

Post by greyhound »

Hello from North Cheshire
I have been reading your very informative forum for a couple of weeks but have been a bit reluctant to post because at the moment I am not really a proper gardener !!!!!
Having lost a lot of my architectural plants in the winter of 2010 I sort of lost interest and just kept a hotchpotch of different plants growing wild in the shrubbery

Over the Summer I have re kindled my interest and have started again........but....... All my plants including bamboo, palms, exotic looking perennials, citrus, nana, agave are all planted in ...........POTS .......large pots ..but still pots
So hence my reluctance to post as I am not really a proper gardener

Hi Rob

Nothing exciting I'm afraid just the basics
Ensete lasiocarpum
Musa banjo
Mussa dwarf cavendish (which is living up to its name - I have grown taller mushrooms than this )
Chamelerops fortunei
Trachycarpus f
Phoenix roebelenii
Ph.caneriensis
Washingtonia filifera
Washingtonia robusta

In all I probably have about 100 large pots out on the patio with a mixture of palms ,bamboo, agapanthus, kniphofia etc

Hi Greyhound, and welcome icon_salut
Nothing wrong with growing in pots or tubs, much of my garden is not planted, as I have non hardy plants under large planted palms and you can't keep digging holes in the rootball.

Most of the plants in the pic below are in pots/tubs, but are black to blend into the shadows  You just have to pay more attention to watering.

Welcome GH,

I had a large Trachicarpus in a pot for three years, planted it out this summer and three potted small one got planted as a group, proper little family they are...

I had Acers in pots, flowering plants in pots. Only for digging them out again I would have planted my Basjoo and Ensete.

Welcome GH. None of us are proper or should I say conventional gardeners in the sense of the word, hence the title. We all lost stuff in 2010 but that is the challenge that keeps us all going. If it was too easy, it would be boring icon_thumleft

Thank you everyone for your warm welcome. WOW Dave that picture of your border is amazing .
I must admit looking at that picture does inspire and tempt me to plant all my stuff in the ground..but I guess the advantage of having them in pots is that I can move them around into different groupings whenever I change my mind ..which being a woman happens on a daily basis
Ventured over the border to Riggs garden centre at Todmorden today and picked up a decent sized Gunnera Manicata for a tenner ...Had to put on the leather gloves that we use for handling angry cats to re pot it into a 120 litre pot ... Left the hose on it for 20 mins and now I can't move it as it is now too heavy :

A big potty welcome to the forum, Greyhound icon_cheers

Be assured that REAL gardeners also garden in pots and by the looks of it you've had plenty of experience icon_thumright
