Shall I plant my fatsia japonica
Shall I plant my fatsia japonica
Hi
I'm new to this forum and wondered if someone can help me?
I have bought some bargain fatsia japonicas and I wondered if I can plant them in the ground or should I wait til spring?
If I wait til spring, how should I look after them over winter? X

Re: Shall I plant my fatsia japonica
It depends how big they are but I would plant them outside. They are relatively hardy plants, the roots will be protected in the ground rather than In the pots.
Re: Shall I plant my fatsia japonica
Ah thank you. They are small but I think they've been grown outside so seem like they'll be ok?
Re: Shall I plant my fatsia japonica
Fatsia leaves can look like they are going to die when hit by frost but they recover well. Sometimes the growing point will die but they re shoot in the spring.
Re: Shall I plant my fatsia japonica
Your in a milder spot in the country but personally I wouldn't plant now. Its too cold for them to grow (above or below ground). You may as well, just to be safe, leave them potted and keep in a sheltered spot if cold hits, and then plant in early spring with the soil warms up again.
Most wanted list - Any Young Trachycarpus and/or fern.

I have a couple already and love them. They grow well in my garden. My garden is big so cheap big plants are a plus!

Hi Jennifer,
Depending on the climate zone you're living on, but no doubt I would plant those fatsias in ground if I were you. Anyway (as already said) the roots will be more protected in gound than in containers.
Here's my latest garden blog. I was just talking about fatsias. You can click on english flag (on homepage) tot get an approximate translation in english :

Welcome to the forum, Jennifer
Seems as though you have more than one. In that case you can play safe and plant one and if it's small enough you could cloche it for the winter. Shelter any potted ones against freezing.
