Never give up on Colocasia
My Colocasia Black Beauty got caught in the frost and cold for a short while before being moved to the conservatory last November. The tops were mushed but I hoped to save the rhizomes, but they went soft. and I though that was it. I left the pot in the conservatory in a dark corner under other plants and forgot about it, so left completely dry.
Last week while tidying up I dragged the tub out and was going to dump the old rhizomes, but noticed a small green shoot. It looked like a tiny Colocasia shoot so I watered the tub and left it for a week.
This was it yesterday. I uncovered stolens and these had sprouted as well The morale of the story is never give up on Colocsasia

I know earlier i said mine was still sleeping well that was before closer inspection, i have two little green spots appearing on the top sides of the rhizome, now thats either this years growth or growth from last year i haven't noticed it before.
I can only just get a pic of one side and the pic aint brilliant, have a look see what you think.

That's perseverance for you Dave, well done.
Are we in the same realms as Black magic in the overwintering stakes here?

Colocasia are truly remarkable plants.
I noticedmy gaoligonensis are perfectly well andalive outside, just starting to poke their heads above their bark mulch this week
I really thought they'd be toast after this winter so well pleased they're back.
I also had a look where I left one of the small formosanas last year, and found stolons with some nice green buds Just beginning to form. The main corm looked mushed, but I wouldnt b surprised if it resprouts
I'll have a look to see if pink china made it through tomorrow, fingers crossed

Re: Never give up on Colocasia
My Colocasia Mammoth is just putting in an appearance I noticed this evening. I'll see if I can get a pic tomorrow. Planted out in 2007 and has just survived it's fourth winter and a 100 year December. Can't be bad
A lot earlier to show than in 2009 and 2010

Re: Never give up on Colocasia
The ones being sold loose at GCs last year turned out to be pretty much identical to mammoth. So itsprobably worth your while looking round to try and find them.

sorry mr list no it isn't.., I got mixed up when it said about mammoth, i have found another one but it will cost you over 30 pounds for a 1 ltr plant. A bit OTT that is from jungle plants
Re: Never give up on Colocasia
if it is the one that dave has i the ground all the time and keeps coming back i would pay that.
Re: Never give up on Colocasia
yeah dave has that one shown on the jungle plants website, you can see a pic of it on the gallery photo's i think? or its on the photo shots as you come on to the home page of the forum
