Is my cycas r centre looking normal?

Post by Yorkshire Kris » Thu Apr 28, 2011 8:20 pm

I got this cycas in Nov 2009. It had gone through two winters without damage but still no flush. The centre looks like it's ready to do something. Can these flower in the UK? The reason I ask is that the centre looks a bit different from others I've seen.

No, I don't think so anyway Kris,

Looking at mine, yours looks like the surround has fell in and gone soft where it should feel hard and prickle to the touch. I don't think there are different looking Caudex's.

Hope someone knows different so leave it as is Kris.

Good luck!!

I hope it is a flower, I'd hate to think it was the alternative :( Not seen the very start of a cone/flower before in a revoluta, but if it's healthy its certainly doing something strange, so maybe .......

I will add that the orange fluff at the top of the cycas has been was off with repeated use of the hose, trying to get it to flush last year.

Are you sure Kris thats never flushed,

Ok, did you buy it with all those fronds? It looks great, no varigation at all. I don't know with it ready to flower you should have tried to flush it.

It can't do two things at once...well...I don't think so.

Kata it has always looked like this with nice green fronds. No flush at all. It was only £20. I wish I bought the other two now they were a bargain!! Very heavy though because grown in solid clay, not soil just clay! I have repotted into a slightly bigger pot but still 95% clay on the rootball.

I think it is not flowering, but hopefully will flush this year.

I think it was thought that was the begining of a flower Kris,

Anyway its kept well, mine may have flushed last year but its so varigated and I don't like it like that. I love the Butia, not just any old Butia lol but the one with down swept fronds, and I rather like Trachi even if mine never got through winter unscathed.

Jungle growing is not easy Kris.

Thanks Kris, I never saw a new flush that colour, so it will be interesting to see what happens. Something is definitely happening !
I remember when we were buying rooted bulbs that size from Costa Rica and around 5% would flower and not flush ,but I dont recall being able to see the difference at preflushing stage.

It will be interesting to see if it does something. It has seriously looked like that all the time even the centre. The only thing that has changed with this plant since I got it is that last spring after overwintering it in the garage the leaves went very loose. I could almost twist them round like the centre was going rotten or something. But with a few weeks in the sun and with some water they all stiffened up again. This did not happen the winter just gone.

I don't re-call my flush looking like that, I thought something different was happening there..someone mentioned flowering.

If I get another this year I will phtograph it.
