Feeding young tracys nitrogen.

I have several waggys and fortunei/waggys in various pots.I already give them palmbooster, is it ok to give them the high nitrogen feed i give the big ones. thanks karl.

I don't know if high nitrogen feed will be of any benefit to palms, isn't it more for leafy plants?

If you're using it make sure you stop well before the frosts as high nitrogen feed encourages sap in plants and it's sap that freezes and causes the cell walls to rupture.

You don't want lots of sap in your plants come winter time.

I thought palms were all leafy gogglebox very true about the sap, when i was removing my basjoo pups earlier there was sap coming out of the leafs that i cut off and i have been using nettle feed on my basjoo i think come September time i will stop with the nitrogen feed.

You might be right, I just thought nitrogen feed was used more for plants like Fatsia or Bananas.

In comparison there's very little sap in a palm frond in my opinion.

Hopefully someone will be able to give a definitive answer, Nigel or Jimhardy will know I'm sure.

yeah i can see where you are coming from though gogglebox, as it is not as if palms are a kind of fleshy tissue when you prune them, and the fronds are pretty twigg like in terms of hardness, where as banana plants are very fleshy soft tissue.

Amazing how opinions differ. I spoke to someone recently who swore his tracycarpus loved nitrogen and it made the trunks fillout nice and thick!!. I've ordered some more palmbooster and with it is coming palmfocus?, will the focus replace the nitrogen?. karl.

The way I see it there's no plants on Jupiter and that's a nitrogen atmosphere so it can't be that good for them.

Palms will grow weak and the leaves will be damaged or killed by frost if you feed high Nitrogen. Trying to rush a Palm nearly always ends in disaster. They are the tall, thin things you get from some sheds, where they price by height, not by age. All those tall thin leaves are normally gone after the first winter.

I grow palms hard, which is not much feed, and if you must, apply slow release in mid spring. Do not apply high nitrogen after June.

High Nitrogen = soft leafy non hardy growth
High Potash = tough, stocky, more hardy growth
No feed = slower growing, toughest growth.

Palmbooster is not a feed, it is a root growth enhancer so will give a better rooted (established) palm. Benefits are limited on well established palms.

Not sure of the composition of Palm Focus, but I would not give anything with higher N to K ratio after end of June.

Potash (K) helps toughen/ripen growth ready for winter.

I use Focus for my potted palms, obviously potted palms can't get nutrients from the ground so they need something.

Palm Focus is manufactured from pure mineral salts and enriched with complex organic plant acids, such as humic and fulvic acids and concentrated extracts of kelp.

Palm Focus should be used from March until August.

Karl, where are you getting your advice? It seems like whoever is telling you what to do is deliberately giving you duff, and in some cases, harmful, information.

I think to be fair gogglebox we all get told or read a load of duff information, this is the joy's of the Internet, UK sites and aboard sites do it . Reason being for this is everyone is putting there opinions and some are right and unfortunately some are wrong. Very hard to know what is right and what is wrong, good job this forum is full of experienced growers that actually know the plants requirements.
