Butia Odorata Strictior

Hi folks,
Will some kind soul please explain the difference between Butia Odorata and Odorata strictior? Regards Jas.

I'm only familiar with Butia capitata 'Strictor' where the fronds are nearly straight and not recurved like normal B. capitata.

Perhaps that's also the case with the species you are inquiring about. I've never heard of B. odorata having the 'Strictor' trait.

Thanks Barrie, that explains it then as I beleave the name has been changed from Capitata to odorata.

What was capitata is now renamed odorata so yes you will find odorata strictior.

The strictior is as Barrie decribed.
I had a couple, one I gave to (or swaped with) Nigel many moons ago and another I lost last winter.
Very nice and certainly different to the ordinary odorata (was named capitata) but I found them to be rather brittle in the frond and lost many frond tips in the wind.

Interesting regarding the name change. It has not changed here in North America. What prompted the change and was there ever (or still) any Butia capitata? How did this come about and who or what entity authorized this name change?

There is probably a few more species to be named, but at the moment this is it ( I think ! ) The populations of trunking Butia paraguayensis probably also need to be reviewed because the populations show tremendous variation,but being spread over 4 countries and a vast area this sems unlikely.
