Unwrapped Cycas revolutas today (20th Feb)

Post by Dave Brown »

With the winter being very mild I didn't wrap my Cycas revolutas until early Feb. Today was the day they were unwrapped again. They were wrapped as the forecast was for freezing winds, and these lasted for 48 hours, blasting in from the northeast. The warapping protected the plants from the cold winds and then from the -7.2C still freeze that followed. As we are now due for a mild spell the wrapping has beeen removed and if we do have hard frost from now on, I will just drape fleece over.

This is Cycas rev01 ceremonial unwrapping at lunchtime icon_thumright

Looks lovely, do you remove the outer fronds or leave them be.
It looks to have very little damage icon_thumleft

Dave they are looking superb!

Do you wrap and unwrap as we get cold spells or do you wrap in early winter and leave wrapped till end of winter?

I haven't got any Cycads but after seeing those beauties I'm going to buy a couple...

Delboy The damaged outer leaves were caused by winter 2010/11 but there is no damage this winter so far.

Mike, It's wrapped as little as possible, as I lost enough over the year by over wrapping

That my philosophy. I only cover/wrap when the weather is extreme.

Hi (Admin) Dave,

Your Cyril must have been exhausted at the time of snowy winters as it was wrapped. Inspite of wrapping it your flush is green and healthy. Have you wrapped it before the flush or after the flush ? Have you seen my Cycas flush this week in this link ?http://www.hardytropicals.co.uk/forum/v ... 8&p=287941
