7 foot Phoenix canariensis_CIDP - unprotected in SE London?

Hi,

I'm thinking of buying a 7 foot tall Phoenix canariensis_CIDP and was wondering if it would survive unprotected in SE London?

From my own experience both Chamerops and Butia have been better performers. I have/had (spear pulled) a 10ft + Phoenix which looks terrible. It has grown out from spear pull but doesn't get enough summer to recover fully for the following winter.

Depends where in SE London. If you're in Lambeth you'll have a very good chance overwinter. In Bromley for example, it'll might be fine during a normal winter.

I'm on the Essex/London border. The winter 2010/2011 completely defoliated and killed all but the largest CIPDs in my area, all the CIPDs that I know of in central London survived.

Maybe even Brahea armata would be possible. Providede you get a very sheltered warm sunny garden with a hot wall to fry it. I saw some nice ones in Locarno at Lago Maggiore last month.

I have a Brahea armata. I thought they were ok down to at least -8? I've never known it that cold here. Is that wrong?

It should be okay if you tie the leaves up in November and just protect with some sacking if the temperature goes a few degrees below freezing.

Just make sure that no snow or ice collects near the center on the growing point.

Do as I do down here in Southampton and place a well wrapped hot water bottle before you go to bed as close to the growing point as possible

This should prevent the temperature at that delicate point dropping below freezing and that means all the soft center leaves won't collapse come the spring?

Of coarse don't forget to unwrap and untie the palm as soon as the cold snap is over.

I will be starting a [hot water bottle thread] this coming winter to help save the country,s CIDPs.

This is not SE London, but there are 'public' CIDPs in Hackney growing out in the open (i.e. not against walls). Not sure if they get protection in the winter.

They must get hardier as they get older, because that would make sense to why the ones in London and portsmouth survive?

There is also a Phoenix canariensis_CIDP on a roundabout near Victoria Park (E1?), quite a few in the City (EC*) about the same size as the Hackney one in the picture on roundabouts and in front of office buildings, 2 in Kensington Gardens, and I've seen a few smaller specimens squeezed into the tiny front gardens in my area (Queen's Park).

Mine fits the bill. I'm in an SE postcode and has not had any protection for the last fifteen years. The nearby greenhouse, patio and twelve foot wall/fence on its north side are a big help

I'd deffo give it a punt, Crews Hill have them about that size for £35 and they've done the last two winters in pots. ( they are a bit damaged but you know those are the survivors )

Beautifull Phoenix canariensis_CIDP! And that far north! I have seen some in Locarno, but also with a bit of frostdamage.
