Cycad flowering outdoors in the UK

"Our plants have been outside since 2008 on an extremely well-drained and protected site, and have grown well, the growth spurts luckily avoiding winter.

"While taking a group of visitors around several days ago, I noticed one has produced a flower, a male cone. I have never seen this out of doors. To my mind, it is a first in the UK.

"But, unfortunately, we will not see any seed as no female cones are present on any of our other plants."

So, if this is not unique and any of you out there have a flowering female, get straight on the phone to me.

My cycad was covered in flowers earlier this year. The Acacia pravissima above it dropped its load on the plant last March

I shouldn't think mine will ever flower. I sometimes wait three years before a flush of leaves open. The roots of the Acacia no doubt see to that.

Thanks for the pic, but if the cycad was only planted 4 years ago it must have already been a decent size? So would be a bit like me planting a mature Washingtonia in my garden then a couple of years later claiming I have the first ever flowering one in the UK  But yes I suppose it still is a noteworthy event as have not heard of one at any size flowering outside before...
