Dwarf Cavendish Flowering

Post by harryc »

My Dwarf Cav which I have had inside, south facing lounge for almost 4 years is flowering this year ( will try and put some pics later).

Just wondering whats the chance of it producing fruit and will it die after it has flowered?

It can't be a Dwarf Cavendish, as they have a pseudostem of 7 to 9ft, with leaves on the top. Overall height around 12 to 15ft. Dwarf cav is the plantation banana grown in the Canaries. If around 6 feet, it must be Super Dwarf Cavendish. They also produce edible bananas, but not sure how well they will develop inside over winter.

The stem dies after fruiting, but they have normally produced pups before then.

Would like to see pictures, my one surviving super dwarf is about 3 years old.

I keep that in an East facing window in winter.

That is in a tiny pot :ahhh!:

I tried to get fruit for many years but my conservatory is too cold over winter, and finally lost them all 2009/10. I was told they needed a very large pot, but you seem to be disproving that.

This is the last pic I can find of mine on winter solstice day 2008

Its not open yet so not sure, maybe some heat and sunshine over the next few days will give it a spur.

Cogratulations Harry.
it s amazing. You have some fresh bananas there icon_thumleft icon_thumleft
Did you keep it outside in previous summers and bring inside for winter or only indoors?
Anyway, did a great job in nurturing it.
Please post update pics.

Well I'm surprised that they will fruit in the UK, saying that its living indoors.

There is no reason why they won't ripen, just need enough sun. The plant won't be doing anything now other than trying to ripen the fruit
