Tropical Winter/Spring Bulbs
Re: Tropical Winter/Spring Bulbs
You don't have to avoid Daffodils just because they are common. There are may unusual varieties that you don't see in other gardens. The most exotic looking are the doubles and the cylamenious ones with the swept back petals. I just planted some last week, along with some Erythronium "Pagoda" which have great foliage too.

Also colour is in short supply at that time of year, I grow Tete-a-Tate as are small and more wind resistant.simon wrote:You don't have to avoid Daffodils just because they are common.

You can get them from here when stocks are available.

Re: Tropical Winter/Spring Bulbs
I've given up on Lilies for the time being, as were totally stripped of leaves in 24 hours.

I love those and grew quite a few last year in pots. Also colour is in short supply at that time of year, I grow Tete-a-Tate as are small and more wind resistant.
There was a yellow looking Daff that appeared from nowhere last Spring, I put it in a border.

Re: Tropical Winter/Spring Bulbs
The Tete-a-Tete that Dave mentioned are species, and will self seed ... could have been a bird sown seed perhaps Kata?

Tate-a-Tate doesn't sound very species like, but I suppose French is based on Latin.Kristen wrote:The Tete-a-Tete that Dave mentioned are species, and will self seed ... could have been a bird sown seed perhaps Kata?

Re: Tropical Winter/Spring Bulbs
Thats the only explanation Kristen, a bird,
They were unusual, about four of them.
I do have tet-a tete in a pot but will need to wait till spring to find them.
These are the bird droppings.. Long grass like leaves before the flower, really strange. I know I never bought them.
I found the Tete-a-tetes.

Good point, thanks Dave. "Comes true from seed" would be better descriptionDave Brown wrote:Tate-a-Tate doesn't sound very species like, but I suppose French is based on Latin.Kristen wrote:The Tete-a-Tete that Dave mentioned are species, and will self seed ... could have been a bird sown seed perhaps Kata?

Tete-a-tete's? If you plant bulbs, now, they will flower next Spring.fern Rob wrote:How long does it take them to flower?
For self sown anything up to 7 years according to RHS, so contrary to my optimism! that is probably not how Kata's arrived

Re: Tropical Winter/Spring Bulbs
No Idea Kristen, where they came from,
No one sells just three of Spring bulbs from the Daffodil range I don't think. They surprised me when they turned up last spring.
