Forsythia Blooming, Spring Already?!

Post by cordyman »

This usually doesnt green up again till Spring, and certainly doesnt have any flower buds opening, yet today green growth is shooting, some yellow buds have opened, with more on the way. Its been 12*c today with clear blue skies, and we've hardly had any frosts, but Forsythia blooming in December icon_scratch

Deciduous plants can quite often be tricked. For instance they experienced frosts in november. But now ere in a mild december. The raise in temps can trick plants into believing its an early spring. Don't worry, it will soon realise its made a mistake when the frosts get it.

I've had the occasional forsythia flower for the last few weeks....they've reminded me I need to lop off the top 6ft of the forsythia hedge in the spring :?

ive seen the same here in Cambridge and was wondering if it's time to prune roses (I always prune them when the forsythia bloom)

decided against it, as it will most probably snow in Feb .... it's going to be an interesting year next year, as perhaps many tender shrubs / trees are going to be hard hit (especially Japanese maples)

I cut Forsythia periodically through the winter to have it in vases in flower. Usually takes a couple of weeks to come into flower, once cut. My bushes are quite congested, so I use it as a method of thinning-pruning icon_thumleft
