We got back about 12 days ago...never seen anywhere so inspiring for tropical/exotic gardeners.
There municipal garden's are sometimes more impressive than one's you pay to visit!, I've got some great idea's i'd like to implement when time allow's especially the introduction of more hydranger's ,these were mass planted in various tropical settings and worked well.

What sort of hydrangeas Karl? I'm intrigued to see what you mean. Will you be sharing any photos? The mop head ones always remind me of older relatives in my childhood, the people that would all be around the 100 year old mark if they were still alive today. Everyone seemed to have them when I was a child.

Ha ha, I know what you mean chez!...they have a stigma of old people attached to them, especially the mop head one's.
I will get around to photo's....in the monte garden's in monte there were plenty of various hybrid mopheads that looked stunning amongst palm's/bamboo's etc, such vibrant flower's & leave texture. I already have black stemmed & several variegated specimen's here & hopefully adding more soon...i'll post exact varieties later.

I have seen some pretty lace cap ones - is that the right name? I have also seen some cone shapes heads a bit like buddleja.

Glad you had a great time in Madeira Karl. I am off there for a week in mid October and I'm looking forward to it a lot. It's the first week away with the wife where we've not had the kids with us. I'll post some pictures on my return.

Enjoy, Jon. Beware of leaving your kids behind as my wife and I did something similar in the neighbouring Canary Islands four years ago. That was the last time we took a holiday here but the first time without our boys. Later that year we had moved in by ourselves

Our holidays from here have all been working ones back in the UK. We have a burning ambition for our first proper holiday away from Gran Canaria to be in Madeira. So perhaps you and Karl can whet our appetite with plenty of pics icon_salut

I'm glad you loved Madeira Karl, it's a fantastic island. I went this year and made this video of the plants.

I got back from Madeira last week and took loads of photos. A small selection are shown below.

The first is the view from hotel (Pestana Garden Village Resort) towards the Miramar hotel next door.

This was my hotel although I wasn't located in one of these rooms. I had a view of the garden, Miramar and the hills above Funchal.

Away from the hotel and Funchal the hills around Madeira were outstanding.

Kris may recognise this place below. I am pretty sure he did a short video here.

One of the main reasons I wanted to return to Mareira was to revisit the botanical gardens. The two major gardens are the Madeira Botanical Gardens and Monte Tropical Botanical Gardens. Both are outstanding and worth visiting. Having said that the whole of Funchal is well planted with fabulous municipal gardens dotted around that are superb.

The shots below were taken in Madeira Botanical Garden.

It might not be obvious from the photo, but the mosiac pattern of flowers below are Iresine. Green and pink varieties.

This plant took my eye and I may have a go at this. It's not hardy so will need care over winter. I think no temperatures below freezing for this one.

I could have spent ages in the palm and cycad garden, but by this stage my wife needed a break/chocolate/toilet/coffee/snacks/rest and I was pushing my luck by now.

Monte gardens really are superb and I could happily spend the whole day here.

This lovely Cyathea can be found in the town gardens just outside of the main Funchal centre.
