Hardy Tropicals UK

Who else think's this is a waste of time in most uk gardens?, I realise they are slow but mine does absolutely nothing apart from take space up!. Unless there grown under glass we don't get the heat for them, the one I have is also a decent size with three small trunk's. karl.

They are hot place palms.

So are palm's such as brahea amarta, jubaea chillenis........... they still grow in my garden!, my point is there a crappe palm to grow in uk full stop. karl.

My tiddler hardly moved for years before disappearing a few winters ago. Have just obtained a large replacement. Cooking it in the greenhouse at the moment but will plant it out in my hottest spot soon and give it a diet of hot water on a regular basis.

I think S. minor comes from a hotter place than either J. chilensis or B. armata.

sabals are hardy given heat in the day time,

Well the way our weather's performing there's little chance of that!! . karl.

I know of a couple of people near me that have Sabal minor growing in their gardens & although not the fastest growing palm they do grow & have survived the last few cold winters without any damage...

Nathan, mine has no winter damage but it also has not done a thing after being planted last year. karl.

I'm on the lookout for a decent sized sabal causiarum at a good price.

Well it may need more time to settle in? They do grow down here...

I shouldnt even comment with our 30c+ summers but they do great for me and our winters are far colder. even here they are slow but I really nice one looks wonderful. I have a few types but the "cape hatteras giant" is my fav and it moves at a decent rate. My sabal "birmingham" is as slow as it gets as well as my "mccurtain"

Yes winters may be milder here, but I can't see that summer temperatures would be that different, which it seems is the factor for getting them to grow...
