Re: Manihot
Mine is just starting to get going but is still pretty much a stick in a pot. I've put it outside in the sunshine now, my greenhouse is somewhat devoid of sun. It'll get planted this year so it can bulk up over the season .....

Oh, and if you are thinking of putting a gunnera next to a seating area so one day you can sit under it, bad idea too

Re: Work has begun
It will be hell Becky when all those Dicksonia antarctica get going and get full wingspan   I hope you enjoy pushing through wet fronds after a soggy day  Unless those pics are deceiving me and all the ferns are 6 foot plus you'll get pretty wet. On dry days it's not so bad, just fro...

Re: A few plants from Syon park plant fair
I am reliably informed that Mr Juliasaurus would have killed me if I'd brought home a couple of hefty specimens like that. Just tell him next time you are baby sitting them for me until I find a space to plant them, which may take years. If that fails do the wife trick and promise him a hot dinner,...

Re: Advice needed for bog garden
Greg, You are trying to build a bog with two distinct purposes ...... Certainly the gunnera will want some rich soil/ compost/ feeding to get it really going, sarracenia on the other hand prefer a nutrient poor medium. Traditionally this means a peat and sand mix. Fertiliser is generally a no no as ...

Ah, you missed the one on e-bay then, which measured 45cm trunk and went for £60.00 in the end in Dartford.I have only seen really large ones for sale at £600 recently.....
I was tempted but decided against it in the end as it's all just a long waiting game until they get bigger

Re: Winter, what winter?

Re: Winter, what winter?
Those Cycads are looking mint... I cheated a bit, the 'mint' looking ones came from Ikea recently and planted this year  I had an identical sized one planted for the last two years, which isn't looking mint but certainly alive so I know they'll be fine. Also the barrel cactus is new and...

Re: Winter, what winter?
Dave, -7c at least. I covered the front of the bed with polycarbonate sheeting (left over from greenhouse) suspended on spikes, the back (yucca and large tricocerus) were left to their own devices. The tricocerus was damaged on top where snow settled and my king protea died down to a stump but is sh...

Re: A few plants from Syon park plant fair
I didn't get much at all to be honest, I blame lack of brain on my part for not taking enough cash :? But it didn't stop me, I purchased a couple more Arisaema, Nepenthoides (for which I've come across mixed results as to hardiness, anyone growing it outside and can confirm) and Ringens. I also boug...

Winter, what winter?
Had a day off yesterday and some time on my hands to take a few shots in between thinning out the bamboo. Apologies for the quality of the pics, only took out the snappy snap ...... Dry bed, most of the plants you see survived, including echeveria glauca and two aeoniums I left in situ. A few plants...
