Brahea edulis

I'm in outer London and have had a Brahea edulis in the ground for 3 or 4 years. The lowest we've seen must have been around -6C. No damage at all, not even superficial. My washies (admittedly smaller than the B. edulis), on the other hand, defoliated completely and I eventually binned them as was t...

Your daily weather blog -June 2011 onward

10C and rain and wind all day.

Another weekend, another storm eh? The continent is so much warmer as they're getting a more southerly air current, the division line being the Channel.

HELP! Purchasing exotic/tropical flowering plants in the UK or abroad

jamesbrennan0+ wrote: Wed Feb 12, 2020 1:41 pm The only catch is they also have to be flowering, so I would be looking at a supplier that would grow in a hot house or would import from abroad.
Not sure what the logic behind this is? Why would the conditions they've been grown in affect their future flowering potential for you?

Phoenix canariensis indoor or out?

They will survive near the coast here in Cornwall but I am only 4 miles inland and even a mild winter sees them off That's interesting, I thought you were milder than me, so it must be the lack of summer heat combined with the frosts? I see them all over Greater London and they're 'tough as old boo...

Global warming in uk

On the other hand, the North Pole is moving towards London. But slowly enough that it's not going to have a noticeable effect in our lives.

Who's still visiting then?

I am, but not so much. The DB crashes have decimated the population of HTUK members.

Welcome back HTUK

I only check on here now to see how the few old regulars are doing who don't use other social media platforms. I do use Facebook, but don't use any public groups. I think it's a silly system whereby anything you post is signed by your real name and everybody and their grandma can see. I use many ph...

Dave B's Blog - Winter here we come :-o

Good to see you posting again, Dave.

My 2 butias are doing well. We didn't get anywhere near -9.9C though, I think -6C is the lowest it got here in Feb/March 2018.

Can my Lapageria be saved?

Then why not put an outside tap on a timer? We have had to put another outside tap on for that reason. We couldn't use the existing one for everything as the hose would cross the driveway. That's an option. But I've heard those automated watering setups and not reliable, not in the 'set, forget and...

Can my Lapageria be saved?

I watered it generously during the cool and rainy period (April, May), thought they liked plenty of water I attend to my plants rather erratically and like to keep it low-maintenance, so a greenhouse wouldn't work for me other than for some drought-resistant cacti maybe. Even if I disciplined myself...

Can my Lapageria be saved?

Years ago I planted one at the previous house I was staying at and it did get established, i.e. it grew, flowered and proved hardy, at least over the couple of winters I had it before I moved. Charliep - it's summer now so seeing its slow demise I'm not worried so much about the cold of the upcoming...

Can my Lapageria be saved?

Last year I got a Lapageria and it died over the summer. I attributed it to the heat as it was a hot, dry summer and it was planted in a spot that would get a fair bit of sun. This year I got another one and planted it against a north-facing wall and near a N-E corner where it doesn't get much (if a...

Chammy flowering

I've spotted two yellow flower heads on my chammy.

Should I remove them so the palm puts its energy into vegetative growth? Or keep them on? I'm not interested in germinating the seeds, but I guess I could sell them on ebay.

Tropical Abutilon-like plant ID?

This climber grows at the place I'm staying in Costa Rica. The flowers remind me of Abutilon megapotamicum, but the colours are different. The leaves are also different. The stems turn woody when they get older and thicker. Does anyone know what it is and whether it would be hardy in London? I may t...
