they were probably cut far down the stem just to make it easier to ship them to you. Cut as little of the Basjoo as possible.

Beware them, they are over-rated, slower than fortunei and end up looking ugly as hell in my opinion.

Maybe plant things that enjoy the boggy ground. Trying to radically change the composition of your soil is going to be a long and expensive process.
