I have parajubaea torallyi in my from lawn it was planted out as a 3 strap seedling in April 2010 . It is now over 1m tall and fully pinnate making nearly 5 fronds a year it grows slower but rather well through my winters down here .

Your Chatham Nikau is looking really good again Dave , hard to get a sense of scale but the Washingtonia trunk gives it away !

Mine is still chugging away and slowly pushed 15 cm of new spear growth over the winter .

Yes Dave & Greville i agree she sure is a looker !

Both these palms are within a bulls roar of the ocean and temps are usually winter 16 -24 c summer 20 - 26 C never really hot or cold ,the sea fog or june gloom as the Californians call it add to the humidity .

i only ever use organic for my tree ferns ( 2 dicksonia species and 5 Cyathea ) i use seaweed pellets and blood and bone sparingly and mulch with peastraw . I burnt Cyathea cooperi and cyathea medullris bad by using chemical fertilizer 2 yrs ago :oops:

Dave The first few years it was covered by 50 % shade cloth . after the old frond were sun burnt the bigger subsequent fronds were acclimatised to full sun although on a really hot day this January high 39C (extremely rare) the older fronds were touched up a bit .My Usual summer temperatures are bet...

Rhopalostylis Oceana (Chatham Islands)

This palm originates from the same latitude as Hobart Tasmania and it is certainly making itself at home pushing 3 big fronds in 12 months compared to sabals 1 frond !

I grew this palm from seed in 2007 and is by far the fastest growing Rhopalostylis sapida in my garden .

I use Nutricote total 180 day slow release that i spread around every spring .

I also use liquid kelp that is distributed through a fertigation system and come out the drippers each time i water !

2 leaves a year is normal for me . They do grow quicker one a trunk is formed as i experienced in my old garden .

Thanks Tom Hi sean Next time you are down this way i can give you a tour although it won't take that long :D Archontophoenix alexandrae is a very easy grow it was planted as a double in Dec 2008 and was only 20 cm tall a real fast grower . Before i planted any palms i spent a year preparing the soil...
