Re: Watch out overnight

Yea rained most of the day yesterday before sky cleared around 4.30pm. Temps held up well during the evening and I thought we were going to get away with it, but woke to a low of -2.0C and a thick hoar frost. It says a lot about the mildness of the winter when this was the coldest night (so far!) by...

Re: February and Winter Statistics

Ok here are mine. A very strange winter. In terms of mean temps it was close to average, however in terms of absolute lows it was one of the mildest winters I have recorded in >20 years living here. The absolute low for the 3-month 'meteorological' winter was an incredible -0.4C. This is exceptional...

Re: January 2013 Statistics + Short Summary

Not an especially mild month here, not a cold one either, just average. Slight difference in the maxima and minima, the former being slightly below average and the latter slightly above. There was little daily variation from the seasonal norm, hence the almost total lack of air frosts. TEMPERATURE S...

Re: General Potential for Cold increasing.

The pattern that has dominated since mid-Dec hasn't brought particularly mild weather to us in the north west. But it has been average, and that's almost as good :) The first half of December was very mild here, which led to a mild month overall, but January looks like coming in about average, maybe...

Re: First SUB ZERO Frost survey. Date/area/temp

Fist airfrost of the winter this morning -0.4C, quite a covering of hoar frost too. Cloud approaching from the west did not arrive until just after sunrise.

2013 summary + December stats

This is the first full year logged with the new software. 2013 started with a near-normal meteorological winter followed by a spring that would best be consigned to the recycle bin icon_thumbdown Particularly that awful March :( . -3.8C was the coldest temp I have recorded in March (previously -3C) ...

Re: Frost - SUB ZERO 2013/14 discussion

Only drawback is it needs 2 mild nights in a row to record a mild low :) The other, "only" , drawback being that one cold night, i.e. also cold before Midnight, records as two cold nights ... Much better to use 9am - 9am IMHO. I've only had a couple of days, that I can remember!, in the last ...

Re: Frost - SUB ZERO 2013/14 discussion

Wunderground runs by date, so from 00:00:00 to 23:59:59 so I've had 3 spells of frost... 19/20 Nov were one, but frost on am 10/12 and 11/12. Isn't that the more usual method used even for official weather records in most parts of the world? I thought it was just the UKMO who define the low temps a...

Re: Frost - SUB ZERO 2013/14 discussion

Wunderground runs by date Good point. Bit annoying though ... I wish they would make other improvements, not seen any useful changes for eons. Indicating weather stations that are badly calibrated (temperature sores on Summers mornings), ones sitting at silly temperatures because they are bust, or ...

Just been out for the lunch time walk without a coat. No sun today unfortunately but pleasant nevertheless.
Due to cool down a bit next week.

Re: thoughts on solstice, sun, temps, definition of winter e

I always quite like the reaching February. It always seems we've turned a corner with the day length and sun angle, if not with the average temps. That in itself makes me feel much better.

Re: thoughts on solstice, sun, temps, definition of winter e

Great read :) But another factor is the wind. If it's windy at all (which it usually is here in winter) with typical winter temps it's definitely not weather for sitting outside, sunny or not. The last 3 weeks have been an exception since it's been calm(ish) and dry as well as mild. But I still see ...

Re: Outlook remains excellent

Between 13-15C forecast for me today! Was already 12C as I left the house this morning. Have to remind myself these are not normal temps for mid-Dec and it is in fact due to get significantly cooler (and more unsettled) next week, albeit not particularly cold. And it's still 2½ months until meteorol...

Re: Outlook remains excellent

Opposite situation from a month ago, when we were having very chilly conditions while the southern half of the country basked in 16C. ....
Think the HP is expected to slip SE so we may all be more unsettled before too long......

Re: Outlook remains excellent

Thick grey cloud and still very breezy. It is mild, but I definitely prefer the cold, dry and sunny weather rather than this SW'ly rubbish . :o That looks like a post from one of "those" "weather" forums! Just lovely here, 12C yesterday and didn't get lower than 10C last night..... dry with...
