How to buy ?

Hi all
I have been searching for stock for a proposed section of our garden for 2014. A lot of the tropical plants seem to have huge growth rates So what is the best way to buy or does it vary between plant / species

Options;
Seed
Plug plants
Small plants
Big as can be purchased / afforded
