Re: How much is your water bill?

I'm on a well, but every 5 years or so some of the machinery needs attention (pump, filter, or softener). There's often a grant scheme of one sort or another that pays for upgrades, but I'd still guess we're sinking something like €150/year into maintenance. Add in salt for the softener (€50/year?) ...

Rokeby Hall Conservatory restoration

Cordyman was asking for some more pics, which seemed like a good idea. Quick background: the house was built in 1785 by Francis Johnston for Richard Robinson, the Archbishop of Armagh. Some 2 or 3 generations later (we believe around 1850), the Robinsons added a Turner cast- and wrought-iron conserv...

Re: 4.5 months in a straw cocoon, opening the Dicksonia anta

Hi Cordyline,

Yes, it's probably 1850's (an armorial glass window was put in the house about the same time, so we're guessing there was a bit of a remodel going on; house itself is 1785).

Here's a pic prior to restoration:

Hi Cordyline,

Yeah, that's a Butia Eriospatha on the right. Both it and the Trachycarpus are about 10' tall.

Everything in that picture is inside. Here's one from earlier in the year before any of the other plants went in:

I think my little fella's spoiled, living inside year-round. (He's also a fibrosa rather than antartica, for what it's worth.)

Can't seem to upload images?

I no longer have an Attachments section below the post editor. It worked for me at one point, because I uploaded an image. Has something changed with the status of my account? (I tried to post this in the HTUK web/forum Technical Stuff and Help section, but I don't get a "New Topic" button there.) T...

Re: Auto vent opener

I have three of the Bayless ones, which have been faultless for 4 or 5 years now. I've never had any others, though, so I've nothing to compare them to.

Cheers,
Jeff.

Re: wireworm

I filled a bunch of raised beds with rotting down sod removed to create paths elsewhere. A good recipe for a serious wireworm infestation. I tried several greener cures: probably the most effective was to halve a bunch of potatoes, impale them on bamboo sticks, and bury them several inches deep. Pul...
