cabbage palm usually refers to cordyline which is not a palm at all
or Sabal palmento they are both quite different to each other.
The cordyline as strap like leaves whilst the sabal as palm like fronds

I agree with Eddie seems like wet damp i had it on a Trachycarpus that had next doors tree overhanging it causing constant damp/drips. Tree now gone and new fronds looking good. Oh and welcome to the forum icon_thumleft

im wondering at what depth this should be planted as im sure i have seen some just halfway into the soil and half out is the norm or should be covered to a certain depth ?

Karls right it depends on a lot of factors such as soil type weather etc .Make sure they dont dry out but dont waterlog them either .

Hi Angela and welcome. The lower leaves of cordy`s do naturally go yellow then browns and then you can pull them off or leave as you wish to allow them to die back and fall off themselves. This is what forms the trunk.But also can be sign of stress.Generally they dont transplant well from the ground...
