I don't know what my fig is, planted it well over a decade ago. I cut it back really hard each year and it still fruits. I forget to check and the birds eat them. I'm not overly keen on fresh fig so I pick them and give them to my parents or leave them on if the birds have already started them.

I don't go for the same look as everyone else. Our tropical area isn't jungle and its only a small area around the patio and quite a bit is in tubs. Palms, fatsia, large round leaved ligularia and the one with tall yellow flower spikes that likes shade and damp (name escapes me). Tree fern, fig, bru...

Please say hi to Kata for me.
It is a pain when people log on but don't contribute; best way to kill a forum off that is, its very selfish.

New member - Hello
Hello. We started with tropical plants around 2001. We used the Internet but you are right, not much on line back then. We visited a few specialist nurseries in person. We visited the Eden project around its first birthday and I were really underwhelmed. I don't know if thats because I had spent hol...

Yucca Rostrata Planting Advice
Its not just any fence, its a double pallisade ie it will filter / diffuse and slow the wind. A solid fence just causes turbulence and can make it calm directly behind the fence but much worse a little way from the fence.

Yucca Rostrata Planting Advice
We planted our yucca rostrata out about four or five years ago. The first two winters we kept a table over it to keep the rain off but if the foliage touches anything it gets marked. The last two or three winters it has been left uncovered. Its windy and exposed where we are and we have found its be...

Newbie to the site and gardening
Hello. I look forward to seeing your garden develop. Its very formal and contemporary in design compare to most tropical gardens I see. I admire these style of gardens but I can't do them; I would be out adjusting each pot every two minutes and moving pots so plants matched in growth rates.

Bananas, Ensetes (first Year)
If you have somewhere a little warmer than frost free you don't need to dry them. We have kept them in a heated outbuilding and heated polytunnel at five degrees C and they are fine left in whatever they grew in. Keep them almost dry until you see some growth in spring. Our outbuilding was over ten ...
