Alocasia x portora
I've also got quite a large Macrorrhiza .... thoughts on that?

Alocasia x portora
Just re-igniting this thread, as I'm trying to build my knowledge (and collection!) of Alocasia - one of my Alocasia x portora has been left out in a sheltered spot all winter (ok, brought it in for the sub-zero night), and looks pristine ... actually looks better than the one that is in the conserv...

Yep .... agree there are a few differences now I see them next to each other! I'm learning there are few rules when it comes to Collys, especially when getting to grips with all these hybrids that are emerging! Doesn't matter though - makes for interesting gardening and seeing what works for each of...

Have put some pics of my 'dark stem hybrid' here, if indeed it is the same (it certainly looks it). As I say, mine is very cold tolerant - probably the most of any colly that I have. My dark leaf illustris were quite the opposite and, in fact, I'm not sure I have any left as they were so difficult t...

I have some very similar looking ones, that again were missold as 'Dark Leaf Illustris' (which they clearly aren't). My research suggests they are some kind of unnamed dark stem hybrid ..... they're very cold tolerant though, which is good news.

Welcome back HTUK
Great to see it up and running again - helped me out so much as I started to get in to tropicals .... and no doubt will help me a lot in the future, though hopefully I can start posting some answers as well as questions now!! Fingers crossed the early heads ups on the weather (good and bad) are back...

Red Spider Mite - Alocasia v. Colocasia
I’ve generally been a Colocasia man but, they always do horrendously in the conservatory as they’re a Red Spider Mite magnet. I use neem oil to good effect, but the leaves still end up a write off. The ones outside are fine, but indoors (it over winter) I struggle. Anyway, I’m not looking for tips b...

Yucca rostrata
In the end, I’ve decided to go a slightly different route. I’d always fancied a large columnar cactus there and found a 1m high Trichocereus peruvianus at a great price. I won’t plant out until next Spring but will be much easier to protect in winter due to the lack of fronds!! Most research suggest...

Which do people recommend more, particularly for damp rather than cold (it never gets ridiculously cold here)? Linearis/linearifolia or Thompsoniana?

That was pretty much what I feared .... but wanted someone else to confirm!! Oh well, I assume that is cold/damp that’s done it? Never mind .... it can keep hot and dry out the way for the next year or so and we’ll see what happens. Strange how the opuntias thrive right next to it!

Ok, I’ve dug it up - wouldn’t wish another English winter on a clearly poorly plant!
Ive attaches some pictures of what was left behind, plus the plant itself, in the hopevthat someone can spot the issues. The roots seem to be a few small white ones, but mainly thick, brittle and red in colour.

Hmmm .... I really can’t afford to replace one that big at the moment. It does seem like they’re quite inconsistent .... some do well, some don’t, for no rhyme or reason. I think I will dig it up .... a cold, wet autumn & winter is going to do it no good. I’ll overwinter it and give it next summ...

Those pictures were only a fortnight ago so no change .... certainly no improvement. Really not sure what to do - my gut instinct says it’s on a downward trend, but don’t know if disturbing it will actually be detrimental. Maybe if it can get through this winter, it might kick on?
