Hi Jas, it had about 6 leaves when I brought it around about mid September. No roots just a log. Got it home and got it in the ground immediately and supported it with stakes. I left the leaves on but used small pieces of germination sheet in the crown to protect it then wrapped the top 30cm with ge...

At the end of last summer we brought 2 tree ferns from different nurseries. One has 11 leaves on it and looks fantastic the other has started to produce leaves but none have curled out. Both have irrigation on them daily and were protected from the winter. Does any one have any idea why the second p...

Trachycarpusbuying which to buy?
Hi Moods, the two things you haven't mentioned are the trunks and the roots. Do they have nice fat trunks, there is nothing worse than a Trachycarpus that has a thin bottom to the trunk which then fattens higher up to my mind they look appalling. Then the roots do they have a good root system? No r...

Hi Jas I'm only 25 mile north of central London so we are not as cold as other areas, we haven't had anything much in the way of ground frost yet and in recent years heavy frost doesn't...

Welcome to HTUK, Andy icon_cheers Your desire to have exotic 'moods' in the garden will obviously start with the hardiest of the palms, Trachycarpus and Chamaerops along with lbamboos and phormiums which should need no protection. The addition of plants that can benefit from overwintering in a gree...

Thank you so much for your reply’s. Great links I will be ordering some tree ferns from here. 👍 I plan to buy quite a few plants, mostly small and cheap under planting. I already have planted some. I would like a couple of stand out plants sooner. I think what I would mostly like to know is how quic...

Trachycarpusbuying which to buy?

So at nursery A they have trachycarpus in about 1.5-1.8m some with stripped bark ranging in price from £300 upwards. All in good condition. At nursery B they have trachycarpus in at over 2m with natural bark ...
