Anyone fancy a bit of digging??

karl66 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 23, 2019 5:52 pm I'd bet it has a good age it it also...more like 25/30 years, depending on how large it was when planted.
It says 25 year old palm at the top of the listing, so not a bad estimate. If something like this came up locally to me, I would snap it up! πŸ‘ŒπŸ»

Your most coveted plant?

Only had the luxury of a garden for one summer, so my wanted list is pretty extensive at the minute (including Schefflera Taiwaniana)... Can't afford to get everything at once, but hope to get my hands on some more this year. Will be looking for some Billbergia Nutens to plant amongst the trachys an...

Anyone fancy a bit of digging??

Pretty sure it's a Chammy, based on leaf shape, growing point and trunk made mostly of old stem bases and not all furry! Which makes it even more of a bargain ……… IF you can get it our and transport it!! Agree with your reasoning as characteristics do look more chammy, but just surprised it's so bi...

Is it possible to transplant a large Agave Americana in winter?

I've potted it up in a roughly 50/50 split of compost and sand/grit which I've not watered at all yet. Wondered whether it would be a good idea to water just the once whilst it's still mild, and then leave it dry for winter?... I'll put it in the ground "when the clocks change" in a...

Is it possible to transplant a large Agave Americana in winter?

Miraculously I came away completely unscathed!... which is even more surprising given I had to move it and pot it up my end on my own! I'll definitely protect it, especially as late January is predicted to be cold. One thing I'm not sure on though, is wether to give it a little water now whilst its ...

Is it possible to transplant a large Agave Americana in winter?

Yeah, I've got the Butia pot wrapped in fleece, though mainly keep it there ready so that I can easily wrap the foliage on cold nights. That little corner where the conservatory butts up to the house is actually pretty sheltered, so fingers crossed with a little protection the agave will get through...

Is it possible to transplant a large Agave Americana in winter?

Certainly was. Luckily the chap I bought it from had his son help him dig it up ready for when I got there. Had to get it out alone once I got home though!!

Just got it home and potted it up. Pot is too small really, but will do until it's planted out in its permanent place. Weighs a bloody tonne!!

Is it possible to transplant a large Agave Americana in winter?

The patio by the house is currently a winter home to a large Butia and Trachycarpus, so space is at a premium. I know these need full sun generally speaking, but thinking it could sit under shelter of a tree for the winter months until it's planted out in spring?...I have some polythene sheeting lef...

Is it possible to transplant a large Agave Americana in winter?

My understanding is that they are quite hardy if kept dry through winter, especially at this size. I was thinking along similar lines regards a pot, although it will be far too large to house in the conservatory. Maybe a sheltered corner of the garden will do... just a little apprehensive about shel...

Is it possible to transplant a large Agave Americana in winter?

Tempted to buy a large 4ft by 6ft across Agave (Century Plant) that I have seen on eBay; the only issue I have, is that the buyer has to transplant the plant themselves which will mean digging it up now, and with several months of cold weather still ahead of us, there will be no chance for the plant...
