I don't think it's easy to split them up as the roots will be tangled uip together. I've planted out a similar plant like yours once and the weak stems died leaving a double trunked Washi. Tetrapanax help!

Mine completely defioliates during and after winter. If the growing point is damaged, new leaves will grow back quickly in the growing season. I'm no expert, but I wouldn't worry to much these things are quite tough

Happy 2019 everybody! My father in law moved to another house in Spain, near Orihuela. His house has a patio, so everything has to be in pots. I believe there are no frosts. It's a typical pattern: a frost in late November, then the Atlantic sets in and gives us a mild December.
For now, the mildness continues.....we'll have to wait and see what the SSW is bringing us. The alps have loads of snow, maybe we'll stay on the mild side
