I've had the same on mine. Maybe it's frost damage, or it was caused by to much wet weather.

They grew back fine, so I don't think you have to worry. Nice Washi you've got icon_thumleft

I don't think it's easy to split them up as the roots will be tangled uip together. I've planted out a similar plant like yours once and the weak stems died leaving a double trunked Washi. Try the biggest pot possible, or better put it in the ground. If you plant it out you'll probably end up with o...

Tetrapanax help!

Mine completely defioliates during and after winter. If the growing point is damaged, new leaves will grow back quickly in the growing season. I'm no expert, but I wouldn't worry to much these things are quite tough
